Jackie Brenneman, president of the nonprofit Cinema Foundation, tells CNBC Make It that the idea for a national movie theater holiday was in the works well before 2020, but that the Covid-19 pandemic forced those plans to be postponed.

"The reality of movie theaters in the United States is that the overwhelming majority of shows are more than half empty," Orbach says. So, unless it's a blockbuster movie's opening weekend and theaters are packed, a lot of people will just buy a less expensive ticket and then move to a higher priced seat, he says.
"Sightline at AMC more closely aligns AMC's seat pricing approach to that of many other entertainment venues, offering experienced-based pricing and another way for moviegoers to find value at the movies," Executive Vice President Eliot Hamlisch said.
For fans of the big screen, seeing movies in a theater is a must. But with the rising cost of tickets, reservation fees, and snacks, the price quickly gets out of hand, making regular visits tough to justify.
And that's where a theater subscription service like AMC Stubs A-List can come in handy. A-List lets you see up to three movies a week for one monthly cost. Plans range from $20 to $24 a month depending on where you live.
As a California resident, I have to opt for the top tier of AMC A-List, which costs $24 a month. That might sound pricey, but I end up saving a lot with my membership. Even if I only see two movies a month, the service basically pays for itself.
A-List is worthwhile even if you only see a couple movies a month, but there are a few key perks to keep in mind if you want to get the best value with your membership. Here are a few tips I recommend to get the most out of A-List and its features.
Though reserving tickets online can make planning a trip to the movies super convenient, the process usually comes with a pesky $5 fee. But with an AMC A-List membership, it's free. Not only does this perk save you money, but it can even help out friends since you can also reserve tickets for non-members without a fee. Just note, you can only hold three reservations for yourself at a time.
A-List Entourage is an option that allows you to grant other A-listers permission to reserve your ticket for you. My husband and I can now spare the hassle of speedily booking tickets at the same exact second to avoid them selling out. Now we can grab our seats together in one quick order. This is an especially useful feature to take advantage of during presales for big blockbuster releases.
With that in mind, I recommend reserving a premium ticket whenever you can. These formats offer better picture and sound than a standard showing, and since these tickets typically cost around $23, seeing just one premium format film nearly covers my monthly subscription fee. Not to mention, the viewing experience is spectacular and really makes going to a theater worth the extra effort versus streaming something at home.
If you don't use your weekly tickets, you lose them, so I try to make the most of my membership by taking chances on new films. I've seen several movies using A-List that I might have never watched otherwise, including ones I ended up loving like "Sonic The Hedgehog" and "Bullet Train." If you have weekly tickets to spare, I recommend trying something new rather than letting your tickets go unused. You might even discover a new favorite.
Your ticket allotment can also go toward seeing the same movie more than once, so don't hesitate to book multiple showings. I saw "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and "Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse" three times during their respective theater runs, and I regret nothing.
Sometimes life happens and you can't catch the movie you reserved a week ago. With A-List you don't have to worry about losing any money or waiting for a refund. In fact, you don't even need to initiate a cancelation at all. If there's a schedule issue, you can just not show up.
This isn't something to make a habit of, however, since your reservation takes a seat away from someone else. If you need to miss a movie, I still recommended canceling in the app to free up your spot. Best of all, if you cancel, you get that ticket slot back to use for something else that week instead of losing it.
Both Regal Cinemas and AMC Theaters will be participating in the event, which extends to all movies and showtimes, including premium formats like IMAX and Dolby Cinema. Though taxes and convenience fees like online and third-party surcharges are not included, AMC is sweetening the deal even further by offering a $5 fountain drink and popcorn combo.
According to The Cinema Foundation, a non-profit arm of the National Association of Theater Owners, $3 movie tickets will be available at more than 3,000 theaters and 30,000 screens. The news arrives after AMC narrowly avoided bankruptcy last summer. Having made it through to the other side, AMC greased the wheels earlier this year by bringing back $5 tickets on Discount Tuesdays, a program that the company had discontinued during the pandemic.
